This offers amazing views over historic Tunbridge Wells.All new structural components were designed to be visually lightweight and sympathetic to the existing structure. Contemporary steel elements were detailed to contrast subtly with the original stone fabric.
Access to the clocktower is achieved via the existing twin cantilevered stone staircases, leading visitors into the tower core. From this point, newly installed steel bridge walkways span across voids, providing circulation routes while avoiding intervention into historic masonry.
A five storey spiral staircase provides vertical access to roof level. Intermediate viewing platforms allow visitors to pause and experience historic features, including the original clock and bell mechanisms. These platforms also support interpretation displays and digital projection elements that explain the building’s history and operation.
At roof level, a discreet viewing platform offers panoramic views across Tunbridge Wells. The platform has been carefully integrated into the historic roofscape to minimise visual impact while enhancing visitor experience.

The project has transformed visitor access and engagement, opening previously inaccessible areas while preserving the building’s historic significance. Visitors can now experience the clocktower, view historic mechanisms up close, and enjoy elevated views across the town.
The works were delivered with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, conservation sensitivity, and collaboration between contractor, architect, and heritage stakeholders.
