Company Background

BW May & Son was founded in 1960 by Bert May and his son Len May. They were later joined by Bill Chapell, (Carpentry & Joinery) & Terry Upton (Brickwork) to form BW May & Son Limited in 1971. The idea of joining together was that they could draw on each others pool of skilled operatives to deliver a more effective business within the housing sector.

Following the initial consortium in 1971, there were a number of shareholder changes, but most significantly was the buy in from the current Managing Director, Andrew Spice in 1988, who was the nephew of the original owner Bill Chapell.

Andrew Spice has been instrumental with the company’s progression over the past two decades, which boasts its own joinery workshop and has approximately 100 employees’.

BW May have many staff from a variety of trades providing knowledge and services in specific areas, with the ultimate objective of providing an internally delivered service wherever possible. A construction project which involves a number of building trades is normally delivered through sub-contracting; therefore the BW May method of delivering from within is a unique situation in the construction industry.

The company can undertake project’s up to the value of £2,000,000 and manages the different levels of work by operating a Small Works and Main Contract departments.

BW May’s main strength is the number of directly employed; this enables better control and speedy mobilisation on projects, which results in an improved quality of service and product.

Having directly employed operatives is also very attractive to a number of BW May key clients who have rigorous employee vetting processes.

BW May has become one of the most recognised regional contractors in Swale and are currently based in Bobbing near Sittingbourne. The company location is ideally suited to cover a large operating area.

With the success and continued growth achieved over the past decade, BW May existing customer relationships have developed and resulted in larger and prestige projects being delivered.
